Monitor, so the Romans called the nursery teacher. The military Monitor was an officer to tell young soldiers of the  faults committed against the service. The house monitor was a slave to call the family of a morning, to announce meal times, and so on.

POINT BLANK:
Point blank is a term in gunnery.  When a cannon is so placed that the line of sight is parallel to the axis and horizontal, the discharge is said to be point blank and is supposed to go direct to the object without a curve.  In French point blank is the white mark of the bull's eye in target, to hit which the ball or arrow must not deviate in the least from the exact path.

TRAGEDY:  The word tragedy is derived from the goat-song (tragos-ode) of the Greeks. It is the song that wins a goat as a prize.  It has gradually come to mean a species of drama in which the action and language are elevated, and the catastrophe, sad.

VIZ.
Viz., is a contracted form of the word videlicet which means to wit, that is or namely. The z is a corruption of 3 a common mark of contraction in the middle ages: as hab, i.e., habbit; omnibiz, i.e., omnibus; viz., i.e., videlicet.

It is interesting to see the origin of certain words. Let's look at:

CUSTOMS: The word customs is an abbreviation of the term 'customary dues'. It means a tax imposed on certain goods imported or exported.  This form of tax dates back to the reign of Richard I when a tax was levied on wine imports.  Before that, however, the Greeks had made to use of this form of taxation.

TRAMWAY: Tramway is a contraction of Outramway.  The name takes its origin from Benjamin Outram, who in 1800, toed stone sleepers at Little Eton, Derbyshire, instead of timber, as support the ends of rails at their juncture.
